About This Station
The station is powered by a Vantage Pro 2 Plus weather station. The data is collected every 3 seconds and the site is updated every 30 seconds. This site and its data is collected using Weather Display Software. The station is comprised of an anemometer, a rain gauge, a solar sensor, a UV sensor and a thermo-hydro sensor. The anemometer is situated on a tower attached to my house and is about 58ft above ground level. This puts it just above the tree level around the house. The other instruments are situated on the south side of the house about 3 meters from the shorefront of Flowers Cove.
About Flowers Cove
Flowers Cove is situated on the western shore of Grand Lake. It is shaped like a "W". The station is located in the southern part of the "W" on the northern bank.
Grand Lake is the largest lake in New Brunswick. It is approximately 40km long and up to 5km wide. The depth can reach 30 meters off of Grand Point Bar but is mostly in the 6 to 10 meter range. The lake freezes over in December and thaws in the latter part of April and is usually ice free by May 1. The lake is between 1 and 2 meters above mean sea level during the driest part of the summer. The record flood was in 1975 when it crested at 6.43 meters. In 2008 there was a major flood and the lake reached 6.23 meters
Grand Lake is a prime recreational area. The boating season is usually from mid May to mid September with July and August being the months of heaviest usage. Most boats are local but the lake drains into the Saint John River. Thus we see boats from Fredericton, which is up river and Saint John which is downriver. Each year we see a few dozen boats from the US which enter through the port of Saint John. There is a fair amount of fishing on the lake. In the winter there are many ice fishing shacks located in the middle of the lake.
